Unit information
This unit introduces you to the complex political and social history of Germany between 1918 and 1945. It explores a range of major historiographical issues, from the nature of the Weimar Republic and its demise, to the rise of the Nazi Party and the nature, and eventual collapse of, the Third Reich.
You will learn about topics including Weimar culture and politics, the role of conservative antirepublican elites, economic crises, the failure of the political left, Nazi propaganda and the Nazi Volksgemeinschaft, as well as the racial ideologies of the Nazi dictatorship, German foreign policy and war, and the genocides of 1941-1945.
As such, this unit aims to help you develop a deeper and more critical understanding of this significant historical period.

Students who choose to complete Assessment 2 Option A must complete Assessment 3 Option A.
Students who choose to complete Assessment 2 Option B must complete Assessment 3 Option B.

Learning outcomes
Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
- demonstrate and display detailed knowledge of key themes and turning points in the history of Germany between 1918 and 1945, in terms of political, social, cultural and economic history;
- display knowledge and understand key historiographical debates in the history of Germany, 1918-1945;
- interpret and understand a variety of documentary historical sources;
- identify, understand, engage with, and analyse an historical question;
- write and present well-constructed, properly-referenced history essays; and
- communicate effectively their understanding of various concepts in the study of modern European history, including power, nationalism, race, class and ethnicity.
