Applied Cotton Production (COTT500)

Learning outcomes

Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:

1. demonstrate an advanced theoretical and practical knowledge of the framework and principles of the cotton production system and demonstrate the agronomic skills and knowledge of natural, human and economy resources necessary to produce economically and environmentally sustainable cotton crops;
2. analyse critically and put into practice the principles behind the use of inputs, particularly crop nutrition and water management, for efficient cotton production;
3. critically evaluate the infrastructure behind the production of cotton in Australia, from plant breeding and seed production through in-field growth to ginning of the raw cotton fibre;
4. investigate, analyse and synthesise information on the differences between cotton production in Australia and other countries;
5. justify and interpret theoretical and practical propositions and methodologies and suggest solutions to managing cotton production systems towards greater economic and environmental sustainability; and
6. critically evaluate sources, values and validity of information in professional journals and theorise about developments that contribute to professional practice.
