Unit information
Animal production systems play a key role in global economies. They are an area of constant change and sometimes, controversy.
This unit provides you with a comprehensive introduction to production systems for sheep, beef and dairy cattle, pigs, poultry and emerging animal industries, delving into the products of various industries and the role of consumer demand.
You will explore aspects of reproduction, lactation, growth and development in different production systems.
You will also build knowledge and practical skills relevant to the nature and assessment of animal products and their quality. These include factors influencing carcass composition and meat quality, wool growth and quality.
Note that this unit may require animal experimentation and/or dissection during some mandatory practical classes.

The School of Environmental and Rural Science considers all practical/laboratory/tutorial activities as essential to student learning. Attendance and participation in all practical/laboratory/tutorial classes (sessions) is mandatory - exemptions will not be granted without supporting evidence.

Learning outcomes
Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
- demonstrate a technical and theoretical knowledge of the nature, structure and size of the major Australian livestock industries, and their relation to world markets;
- identify the range of production systems that have developed to support animal production in various environments, and the physical and biological constraints to such systems thereby demonstrating the ability to analyse information, work autonomously and use judgement;
- demonstrate a technical and theoretical knowledge of the subject by recognising the characteristics of the various products of the livestock industries (including meat, milk, fibre and eggs) particularly as they relate to consumer demand for the product; and
- analyse information, interpret and transmit solutions to complex problems by challenges facing Australian animal industries and the opportunities that they present.
