Unit information
Enhance your knowledge in horticultural science with this unit, recommended for early postgraduate students. In this unit you have the freedom to tailor a special program of study that meets your individual needs.
This unit provides you with the opportunity to acquire high-level subject expertise in a specific topic in horticulture, with a guided reading program, supplementary lecture material, discussions, seminars and written assignments.
Your assignments will take the form of a mini project, a poster presentation, paper critique and an abstract for a scientific paper.
Extend your capacity for independent research and equip yourself for further advanced study in your field by honing your horticulture research skills, critical thinking, scientific writing and communication abilities.

Attendance and participation in all practical/laboratory/tutorial classes (sessions) is mandatory - exemptions will not be granted without supporting evidence.

Learning outcomes
Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
- demonstrate skills necessary to become effective horticulturists and life long learners; this will also demonstrate an advanced and integrated knowledge of the subject;
- research and apply established theories and knowledge frameworks to a body of knowledge or practice within the subject;
- demonstrate the ability to identify problems and seek solutions through critical reading and thinking and experimentation where suitable; this will also demonstrate the ability to work autonomously and use expert judgement; and
- demonstrate the ability to undertake scientific research and communicate this knowledge and these skills to specialist and non-specialist audiences.
