Unit information

China and India have risen rapidly over the past century to become economic superpowers. Studying this unit, you will chart the progress of the Dragon and the Elephant towards their current status and position in the world economy.
You will examine the nature and significance of these countries’ economic development and consider the processes of change. You will explore issues such as the two economies’ natural resources and use of labour, as well as the roles of foreign investment and the state.

Learning outcomes
Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
- demonstrate a specialist understanding of the processes by which China and India gained their present positions in the international economy;
- demonstrate a specialist understanding of the impact of colonialism and the current political regimes on the economic development of these two nations;
- evaluate the role of labour management on such development;
- identify and evaluate the role of the state and foreign direct investment in the economic development of these two countries; and
- critically evaluate the degree to which such development is sustainable.
