Unit information

Effective business decision-making is a crucial skill for business graduates to build a successful career in business and accounting. Knowledge in the fields of financial accounting and management accounting aids in making effective business decisions. This unit, combining knowledge in these specific disciplinary areas, provides a strong foundation to help you understand the basics of business decision-making and the role of accounting information in making effective business decisions.
Topic areas include accrual accounting principles to recognise, measure, and record economic transactions, the accounting cycle process, producing basic financial statements, internal controls, receivables, payables and inventory in a business setting, the scope and purpose of management accounting, planning and control, budgeting, job costing and CVP analysis, short- and long-term business decision-making and time value of money.

Learning outcomes
Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
- demonstrate a foundational knowledge of the theory and practice around the accounting cycle, from recording transactions through to preparing financial statements, under the accrual accounting system;
- demonstrate foundational knowledge related to internal controls, receivables, payables and inventory in a retail business setting;
- demonstrate knowledge of the theory and practice of management accounting and apply this to solve business-related problems in areas such as planning and control, budgeting, job costing and CVP analysis, at a fundamental level; and
- demonstrate knowledge of the theory and practice of management accounting in solving business-related problems in the areas of short- and long-term business decision-making and the time value of money, at a fundamental level.
