Biography

I am a socio-legal scholar with research interests in the intersection of law, politics, and justice in the context of Southeast Asia and the Philippines. I have examined the evolution of the rule of law and a hybrid legal regime in regional integration of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN). I have published on a wide range of topics involving judicial politics such as the link between public support and judicial independence, of women judges and judicial autonomy, and on judicial impeachment and court leadership. My deep interest in conflict and justice has led me to conduct both scholarly and policy studies on security, hybrid justice and legal pluralism, and humanitarian cooperation in post-conflict Mindanao, Philippines. In recent years, I have done empirical studies on challenges to democracy such as misinformation, crime, and violence. I came from the School of Regulation and Global Governance of the Australian National University where I was a Fellow until 2021, and the School of Government of the Ateneo de Manila University where I worked for two years as Associate Professor and Senior Fellow.
