Biography

Professor Rikki Jones is a professor in nursing with an emerging research profile. Her research activities focus on rural and remote, mental health, violence (Occupational, Sexual and Drug-related) nursing education. Jones completed her PhD in 2021 and has since been working under the mentorship of a world renown research Professor Kim Usher. Recent projects include working as a lead chief investigator (CI) on a MRFF ECR MCR initiative grant focusing on first responder mental health in rural Australia and CI on a collaborative government tender, and as a principle chief investigator on multiple research projects focusing on rural first responders’ mental health, childhood sexual assault and sexual violence, nursing students experience of learning and clinical placement, and drug and alcohol violence. Jones has over 17 years’ clinical experience working as a registered nurse in rural and regional areas. Her experience is in both acute and community health with main areas focusing on Emergency care, theatres, and rural care in MPS (multipurpose service). Jones has an established and sustained research contribution in the field of nursing in relation to outcomes in the areas of drug and alcohol, violence, mental health, rural and remote health care, nursing education and public health. Jones’ PhD project was the first in Australia to explore the experience of paramedic and police first-responders in relation to managing methamphetamine intoxication in the pre-hospital environment. As a result, it was pivotal in building new knowledge in this area. Jones was recently awarded a Medical Research Futures Fund (MRFF) grant as CIA focusing specially on rural Australia’s first responders’ mental health (2024-2026). Jones research outputs is at 20 publications in high quality peer reviewed journals, FWCI 1.0, H index- 5 (Scopus) 7 (google scholar). Jones is currently supervising 5 PhD/MPhil candidates.

Rural health including mental health of first responders, and survivors of child sexual assault and sexual violence; nursing students well-being and experience during learning and clinical placement experiences; and health care workforce issues.
