Research Interests

Improvisation and harmonic systems with regard to theoretical positions and practice. He is also keenly interested in curriculum development. He has renewed his interest in transcription of early renaissance religious music working with MSS from the Vatican Library in particular. A major research project has been completed: An Editorial Translation of the Vatican Manuscript, Capella Sistina 51... Liber Missaran, vols I-VI. A similar sized project is now underway with focus on mss held in 'sHertogenbosch. He and Dr Jason Stoessel are the architects of The Caron Web Site which is devoted to the works of the 15th century composer Caron. Of particular note is the inclusion of sound files.

Research Supervision Experience

Primary Areas: Fifteenth century music - transcriptions of late fifteenth century music and text underlay issues. Modality and applications of musica ficta. Aspects of Medieval and early Renaissance theory.
Secondary Areas: 18th century Baroque harmonic processes. Structure and Form in 18th and 19th century music.
