Biography
Julia completed her undergraduate and postgraduate degrees at the University of Queensland in Brisbane. She spent a year in Europe, based primarily at the Karl-Franzens Universität, Austria while researching for her doctoral thesis, on East German writers Helga Schubert, Helga Königsdorf and Monika Maron.
In 1999, Julia was offered a position as Associate Lecturer in German at the University of New England and, from 2001-2004, she held a position as Associate Lecturer at the University of Tasmania in Hobart. There, Julia was responsible for Beginners' German and Business German, as well as for lecturing about German literature, film and culture. In addition to this, she modified Beginners' German, so that it could be offered as a web-dependent unit on other campuses in Tasmania. In 2003 her thesis was published as a book by Peter Lang. It is entitled Realism and Reality in Helga Schubert, Helga Königsdorf and Monika Maron.
In 2005, Julia returned to the University of New England as Lecturer, where she was appointed to develop online components for the German courses as part of a Higher Education Innovation Project grant with Associate Professor Kerry Dunne. After the conclusion of this project, Julia was appointed to the position of Lecturer in German and remained at UNE as lecturer until 2014, before transferring to a casual lecturer position for family reasons.
