Dr Timothy Chapman
Senior Lecturer in Earth Sciences - School of Environmental and Rural Science
Biography
Tim obtained his PhD in geology from the University of Sydney in 2017. He has been at UNE since 2019, initially as a postdoctoral fellow and subsequently a lecturer in mineralogy and petrology. Tim’s research is a mix of igneous and metamorphic petrology, focusing on the formation and evolution of the lithosphere and mantle. His primary interest is in the utilisation of natural geological information obtained at the scale of minerals and rocks to elucidate processes responsible for the formation of ancient and modern mountains. His research involves the application of various datasets including field relationships, microscopy, geochemistry, and micro-analytical techniques of samples returned from extreme conditions within the Earth. He uses this information together with advanced computational methods such as phase equilibria modelling to understand the textural evolution of rock formation to constrain tectonic processes. He has active field areas in Fiordland, New Zealand, New Caledonia, New England, central Australia.
