Biography
I obtained my BSc (Hons) from the University of Maiduguri, in Nigeria; MSc from the University of Aberdeen, Scotland , and PhD from The University of Adelaide, Australia. More recently (2006), I completed studies for the Graduate Certificate in Higher Education at the University of New England, Australia. I have previously worked at Ahmadu Bello University, Nigeria (1987-1999); University of KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa (1999-2001; 2003-2004); University of Pretoria, South Africa (2002) and for a short period at the Technikon Free State (now Central University of Technology, 2002).
My research interests centre on the nutrition and digestive physiology of farm animals, particularly poultry, using biochemistry, cell kinetics, cytochemistry and immunohistochemistry, among other techniques. More recently, I have been involved in research into alternatives to in-feed antibiotics in poultry diets and the potential of various low-cost alternative feed ingredients for poultry. I have published one scientific book, one general interest book, six book chapters, and over 120 peer-reviewed journal articles. I have made more than 160 presentations at international conferences, 24 of these, invited. To date, I have graduated 20 PhD, nine Masters and two Honours students. I am currently supervising several PhD students. I have received competitive, University and industry grants of more than $3.62 m to support my research.
I serve on the editorial board of a number of scientific journals, including Animals; Asian Journal of Poultry Science; Indian Journal of Poultry Science and Poultry Science Journal. I also review for a large number of scientific journals.
