Biography

Patrick Hutchinson is an Emeritus Professor of Finance in the UNE Business School at the University of New England (UNE), Armidale, Australia. He is a Fellow of CPA Australia. He has a PhD from the University of Bath, England where he was a member of the staff of the School of Management, until he joined UNE in 1979. He was appointed Professor at UNE in December 1990 and was Head of the Department of Accounting and Financial Management (now part of the UNE Business School) from 1990 to 1994. He was Dean of the Faculty of Economics, Business and Law from 1996 to 2001. He has chaired, and been a member of, numerous department, faculty, university and external committees and has been involved directly in many important developments at UNE.

Professor Hutchinson’s specialist field of interest is the financing of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and particularly their capital structure. He has taught accounting, finance and small enterprise management to undergraduate, postgraduate, MBA and post experience students at universities in Australia and the UK. He has supervised, and been an examiner for, over 20 PhD students at universities in Australia, India and the UK. He is, or has been, a member of many editorial boards for accounting, finance and small enterprise journals including the International Small Business Journal (UK) and the Journal of Small Business Management (USA).

His publications include numerous books, and chapters in books, by international publishers: Croom-Helm, Gower, Harcourt-Brace, Routledge, Thomas Nelson and John Wiley. His most important books are the research monograph “The Financing and Financial Control of Small Enterprise Development” (with G. Ray), Gower, 1983 (reprinted 1984 and 1986) and “Small Enterprise Financial Management: Theory and Practice” (with R. McMahon, S. Holmes, and D. Forsaith) published in 1993 by Harcourt Brace, both of which have been extensively cited and also, more recently, “Small Enterprise Finance” (with S. Holmes, B. Gibson, D. Forsaith and R. McMahon) published by John Wiley in 2003.

He has published articles in: Abacus, Accounting and Business Research, Accounting Forum, Chartered Accountant in Australia, Indian Journal of Accounting, International Journal of Management Reviews, International Journal of the Economics of Business, Journal of Business Finance and Accounting, Journal of Enterprising Culture, Management Forum, National Westminster Bank Quarterly Review, Small Business Economics and Small Enterprise Research. His most cited article is “Small Firm Growth, Access to Capital Markets and Financial Structure: Review of Issues and an Empirical Investigation” in Small Business Economics, 1996, V8, pp 59-67 (with F. Chittenden and G. Hall). Articles (with G. Hall and N. Michaelas) dealing with industry and then country differences in the determinants of SME capital structure have appeared in The International Journal of the Economics of Business (2000) and in The Journal of Business Finance and Accounting (2004) and are increasingly cited.

Professor Hutchinson’s other activities include being external referee, assessor, examiner and consultant to universities and grant-awarding bodies in Australia, Hong Kong, India and the UK. His business and professional experience includes employment in accounting and finance positions, office bearer in professional organisations and directorships. He has presented conference and seminar papers in Australia, Belgium, China, France, Holland, India, Singapore, Spain the UK and the USA and is the recipient of various grants, awards, fellowships and visiting positions at universities and academies in Australia, the UK and China.
