About this scholarship

Benefits:

Indigenous DVCR approved Scholarship valued at $44,609 p.a which will have indexation annually and available for up to two years for a Master's by research and three years for a Doctoral Degree.

Number offered:

One

About the project:

The Gwydir Wetlands in northern New South Wales, located on Kamilaroi Country, comprise a range of flood-dependent plant communities of high ecological value. Several wetland plant species in this region have cultural relevance to Indigenous communities and form part of long-standing ecological knowledge systems related to water and land management.

This project will focus on the relationships among Indigenous cultural values, threatened wetland flora and water governance in the Gwydir Wetlands by examining how environmental watering and management practices affect the conservation of culturally significant species. The project will also explore how Indigenous ecological knowledge is represented in current management frameworks. This project will link ecological data on threatened wetland flora with Indigenous knowledge to contribute to more inclusive and evidence-based approaches to water governance by aligning biophysical data with cultural priorities.

The successful applicants will be working with the Aquatic Ecology Lab at UNE. The Aquatic Lab is a multidisciplinary team of 10 scientists who work on the ecological outcomes of environmental flows in the northern Murray Darling Basin. Other research projects are in the northern rivers of NSW, focused on catchment-scale drivers of poor water quality and the health of aquatic ecosystems.

The Aquatic Ecology Lab is based in the School of Environmental and Rural Science (ERS). ERS is a research-intensive School that attracts external and internal competitive funding to support research at the leading edge of ecological and agricultural research, nationally and internationally. The School comprises seven disciplines including agronomy and soil science, animal science, botany, genetics, earth sciences, ecosystem management and zoology.
