About the project:
Are you passionate about animal science and sustainability? The University of New England is a world leader in ruminant greenhouse gas emissions research, and we are seeking motivated Masters and PhD candidates to join one of the world’s most active and impactful livestock sustainability research groups. We currently have a number of fully-funded research projects available, offering students the opportunity to step into an active, collaborative research programme with immediate impact on livestock production systems, science and sustainability. Our team works at the cutting edge of emissions reduction science, investigating novel feed additives, early-life intervention strategies, genetic approaches, precision supplementation, and large-scale field trials across diverse Australian grazing systems. Students gain hands-on experience with state-of-the-art research methodologies, and collaborate with leading national and international researchers on high-impact projects. The work you contribute will directly inform industry practice and national emissions accounting, with real potential to shape how Australia — and the world — meets its agricultural climate commitments. How will the scholarship be paid?
The stipend value is:
$37,746 (2026) per annum tax-free for full-time students, paid in fortnightly instalments.
$18,873 (2026) per annum, taxable, for part-time students, paid in fortnightly instalments.

To be eligible for a RTP Stipend Scholarship:
- Must be a domestic student accepted into an accredited HDR course of study at an Australian HEP, OR
- Must not be receiving an equivalent award or scholarship from the Commonwealth designed to offset HDR tuition fees.
UNE administered stipend scholarships are offered subject to enrolment as a full-time, on campus student for the duration of candidature.
Before you apply
Before you apply for this scholarship, please ensure you have read and understood the below important information:

- Outline of proposed/current PhD/MPhil Research Project
- Copy of relevant research thesis and other research, published and unpublished
- The names of two confidential references, with at least one being an academic staff member from an Australian university.
Important documentation
All applicants must provide two referee reports. The University will not request reports on your behalf. Referees must be qualified to speak with knowledge and experience about the applicant regarding it is advised that you request your referee to submit this report within two weeks of receieving the link:
- academic achievement and/or ethic during the qualification that is of most relevance
to this application; - research capacity and/or research achievement; and
- if applicable, employment experience/training of most relevance to this application.
Applicants must request their referees to submit their written reports directly to the University using the Referee's Report Form within two (2) weeks of receiving the link.
Your referee should not have a close personal relationship with you (e.g. family member). Please refer to the conflicts of interest policy if you require any further information. Referee reports must be submitted no later than one week after the closing date of the scholarship round. Applicants must provide contact details of referees in the candidature application form.

For new candidates - If you are a new candidate who does not have an offer of admission in Higher Degree Research (HDR), you must first apply for candidature via the online application portal. Please visit our How to Apply/Enrol webpage. Scholarship applications will only be accepted during round dates, therefore we encourage you to submit your EOI and complete the application for candidature prior to the scholarship round opening to allow sufficient processing time.
Please note, all scholarship applications received will be reviewed concurrently using the same assessment mechanisms. Enrolment status will not impact the outcome.
