The A.G. and I.C. McCready PhD Scholarship

Background

Mr Wai Kwun Lam and Mrs Pansy Lam, resident both in Hong Kong and in Sydney, have established this scholarship in memory of Mr Alfred and Mrs Irene McCready.

Alfred McCready (1916-96), was a Gold Medallist in Classics at the University of Queensland in 1940 and taught Classical languages at UNE from 1958 to 1976. Irene McCready (1926-2003), was also a Classics Gold Medallist at the University of Queensland and taught Latin at New England Girls School for many years, and also initiated Saturday morning classes in Modern Greek for school students from Greek and Cypriot families in the city.

Mr and Mrs Lam have previously been active supporters of the University’s Museum of Antiquities (most recently in 2022) as well as funding this new scholarship to support PhD study in Ancient History and Classical Antiquities, specifically to honour the memory of Alfred and Irene McCready.

Details 

The scholarship is valued up to $5,000.00 p.a. for three years for a doctoral degree or, in the absence of any suitable PhD candidates, two years for a research masters degree.

Eligibility and Assessment Criteria

The applicant must be an Australian Citizen or permanent resident as defined by the Commonwealth.

Applicants must be enrolled in PhD research degree at UNE in Ancient History or in a cognate field on a topic examining the material culture of Classical Antiquity.

Full time on campus candidates are preferred although part time or online may be considered.

Open to commencing and continuing UNE students enrolled in a Higher Degree Research Course. Applicants must have an outstanding degree from any university in Ancient History, or in a cognate field such as Classics, Museum Studies, History, Archaeology or Classical Reception (e.g. English, Art History, Architecture, Theatre Studies), and be enrolled or enrolling in postgraduate research at UNE in either Ancient History or in a cognate field on a topic exploring the material culture of Classical Antiquity (as defined by the collections of the UNE Museum of Antiquity (UNEMA)).  The collections of Classical Antiquity in the UNE Museum of Antiquities (UNEMA) are the:

• Ancient Near East
• Cyprus
• Egypt
• Italic Peninsula
• Greece (Bronze Age to Hellenistic Mediterranean world); and,
• Roman Empire (From its foundations to the Byzantine era)

Selection Criteria/ How to Apply

Student's applications will be assessed, and the successful recipient will be selected based on in order of academic merit, and then application.

Candidates must complete the HDR (Higher Degree Research) Scholarship Application form and submit to the Graduate Research School along with the following.

• Evidence of Australian citizenship or permanent residency
• Certified copies of degree transcript/s
• Curriculum Vitae
• Outline of proposed/current PhD/MPhil Research Project
• Copy of relevant research thesis and other research, published and unpublished
• The names of two confidential references, with at least one being an academic staff member from an Australian university.
