Background

The Clare Burton Memorial Scholarship was established to honour and continue the work of Dr Clare Burton, a leading researcher, public sector administrator, academic, consultant and writer on employment equity. The gift aims to helps students complete research in equality in all spheres of endeavor including (but not limited to) employment, education, health, communications, engineering, and science

Prize Summary:

Value per annum: $10,000
Duration:  One-off Research Allowance
Payment Method:  Student bank account  
Number awarded in 2025: 2 (Each Scholarship is valued at $10,000 as a one-off research allowance.)
Application Closing Date:  Applications close 31 July 2025

Eligibility:

Enrolment status:  Current research students at any Australian university, enrolled either full- or part-time in a research degree, focusing on gender equity, and having completed at least the first milestone of their research degree, are eligible to apply.

Be enrolled in Doctor of Philosophy, Professional Doctorate, or Master of Philosophy

Scholarship 1: Women and Gender Equity

  • Open to Australian citizens, permanent residents, permanent humanitarian visa holders and New Zealand citizens.
  • Your research must focus on gender equity. This encompasses women and equality in all spheres of endeavour including (but not limited to) employment, education, health, communications, engineering and science.

Scholarship 2: Advancing Gender Equity and Inclusion in Australia

  • Open to Australian citizens, permanent residents, permanent humanitarian visa holders, New Zealand citizens and international students studying at an Australian university.
  • Your research must focus on gender equity with the aim to advance equity and inclusion within Australia. The research must be specific to Australia.

How to Apply:

Applications for the Clare Burton Memorial Scholarship will open in mid-June and close at the end of July.

To apply for the scholarships, submit a single application via the online form. You’ll be asked whether you’re applying for:

  • Scholarship 1: Women and Gender Equity
  • Scholarship 2: Advancing Gender Equity and Inclusion in Australia
  • or both.

You’ll need to provide:

  • a research proposal summary
  • an academic transcript
  • your research background
  • contact details for two referees.
