The Kathleen Martin Travelling Scholarship in Classics

Background

The Kathleen Martin Travelling Scholarship in Classics will support UNE Higher Degree by Research students in Classics, Greek or Latin to travel abroad for research and/or conference attendance in a field related to their thesis topic.

The funds for this scholarship have been provided by Mrs Rosemary Leitch of Armidale in memory of her godmother, Miss Kathleen Martin.

Who can Apply?

  1. Australian Citizen/Permanent Resident:
    The applicant must be an Australian Citizen or permanent resident, as defined by the Commonwealth and resident in Australia.
  2. Full-time preferred, though part-time may be considered.
  3. On campus preferred, although online applicants may be considered.
  4. Open to commencing and continuing UNE students enrolled in Higher Research Degree in the School of Humanities, Arts and Social Science focused on Classics, Greek or Latin. Note the scholarship is not available for Ancient History candidates.
  5. Higher Degree Research includes: Doctor of Philosophy and Masters by Research degrees.
  6. The research should have a strong focus on one or both Classical languages making studies in linguistics, history, philosophy, religion, literature, etc acceptable. However, art history or archaeology would be excluded. Note that while a candidate may work on a historical topic, this differs from being a candidate in Ancient History, as these candidates may not possess the language proficiency required of a Classics candidate.

Selection Criteria

Applications are assessed on merit and should include a description of the postgraduate research project and proposed outcomes from the Award.

Notes

  1. Preference will be given to an internal full-time PhD or MPhil candidate. However, an external or part-time candidate may be considered if in that year there is no suitable internal full-time applicant.
  2. The scholarship will not be awarded if there are no exceptional candidates.
  3. The award shall be made on the recommendation of the Higher Degree Research Committee and administered by the Graduate Research School.
  4. The Selection Committee’s decision is final

V.   Copy of Bachelors thesis and other research, published and unpublished
VI.  500-word statement on how the scholarship will assist the candidate
VII. The names of two confidential references, with at least one an academic staff member at UNE

Conditions

  1. The award is intended for the nominated degree and may not be deferred or transferred.
  2. If you wish to make any significant changes to your enrolment (e.g. change of degree, study mode or load) you must notify the Graduate Research School prior to doing so. If you no longer satisfy the criteria and conditions of the award you may forfeit the award.
  3. Failure to meet the conditions of your award may result in you being required to repay any instalment already received.
  4. The award is payable into the recipient’s student research account: within 30 days of commencement of the Award and on successful completion of the students successfully completed annual milestone or HDR Progress reporting round whichever is the latter in line with a 12-month period.

Notes

  1. The scholarship may be held in conjunction with other scholarships.
  2. The scholarship may be held only once by any individual.
  3. The selection committee shall be comprised of (any two):
    » The Head of the School of Humanities; a Graduate Research School representative; and the Chair of the UNE School’s HDR Committee, or their nominees;
    » The staff members of the discipline of Classics & Ancient History able to attend.
    » The Convener of Classics & Ancient History will normally chair the
    Committee.  Should there not be consensus, the Convener of Classics & Ancient History has a casting vote.
  4. The Selection Committee’s decision is final.

The successful applicant for The Kathleen Martin Travelling Scholarship in Classics must acknowledge the Kathleen Martin Travelling Scholarship in Classical Languages explicitly in the thesis, at the conference presentation supported by it, and in any other published research or conference papers made possible by this scholarship.
