Maiben Davies Postgraduate Research Award in Classics
Background
Established in memory of the late Maiben Davies, this award will be awarded to a full-time Doctorate or Masters by Research candidate undertaking research in Classics.

Value per annum: $7,000 per annum
Payment method: Two equal instalments of $3,500
Number awarded: 1 award holder at any one time
Duration: 2 years (Masters candidates); 4 years (Doctoral candidates)

Who can Apply?
- Australian Citizen/Permanent Resident:
The applicant must be an Australian Citizen or permanent resident, as defined by the Commonwealth and resident in Australia. - The applicant must be enrolled/enrolling in a Classics research degree with a strong focus on ancient Greek language or Joint Classics, on a topic in any of the following areas: linguistics, history, philosophy, religion, or literature. Art history and archaeology are excluded. Note that while a candidate may work on a topic outlined above, they must have the formal language proficiency required of a Classics candidate.
- Full-time study is preferred. Part-time will only be accepted in the absence of a full- time candidate, and subject to annual renewal and review.
- On campus preferred, online applicants may be considered.
- Open to continuing UNE students enrolled in Higher Degree by Research: Doctorate /or Masters by Research degrees.
- Applicants must have an outstanding, first degree from any university in ancient Greek language or literature, or Classics, and intend to pursue postgraduate research in any area of ancient Greek or Joint Classics (Homer to the early Byzantine period), which involves strong focus on Greek language or literature.
- The applicant must be undertaking research in the area of Classical Languages, including linguistics, history, philosophy, religion or literature, excluding art history and archaeology.
Selection Criteria
- 1st class honours in Classics or
- Outstanding results in Classics in Masters coursework with research component

I. Evidence of Australian citizenship or permanent residency
II. Certified copies of degree transcripts
III. Curriculum vitae
IV. Outline of proposed/current PhD/MPhil research project
V. Copy of BA or MA coursework thesis and other research, published and unpublished
VI. The names of two confidential references, with at least one an academic staff member at UNE
Conditions
- The holder of this scholarship shall be required to repay it if candidature is transferred to another University.
- The successful applicant of the Maiben Davies Postgraduate Award in Classics must acknowledge it explicitly in any other published research or conference papers researched or written during the life of this grant.
- The scholarship is payable each year in two equal instalments, the first at the start of the award, the second on the six (6) month anniversary, subject to candidature milestones and adequate candidature progression.

- The scholarship may be held in conjunction with other scholarships.
- The scholarship may be held only once by any individual.
- The selection committee shall be comprised of:
» Graduate Research Committee Scholarship Working Group and the inclusion of: Dean of the School of Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences, (Chair) or nominee;
» Head of Department, Archaeology, Classics and Ancient History
