Research End-User Engagement
What is a Research end-user?
A research end-user is defined as an individual, community or organisation outside of academia that will directly use or benefit from the output, outcome or results of the research. Unlike academic peers who primarily engage with research for knowledge advancement within scholarly circles, end-users implement research findings in practical, real-world contexts.
Examples of Research End-Users:
- Government departments and agencies
- Private sector businesses and industries
- Non-profit organisations
- Professional associations
- Community groups and organizations
- Healthcare providers and systems
- Policy makers
- Cultural institutions
Research end-users are NOT:
- Other Higher Education Providers (HEPs) or Universities
- Organisations that are affiliates controlled entities or subsidiaries (such as Research Institutes) of a HEP
- Equivalents (international of domestic) of the above exclusions.
Research Engagement Activities
The Commonwealth Government requires UNE to report on all research activities our HDR candidates conduct with research end-users/external organisations.
HDR Candidates should contact the Graduate Research School (GRS) if they're involved in any of these activities:
- Research Internships: Temporary positions with research end-users
- Industry Supervision: Having a supervisor from an external organisation
- Industry Scholarships: Receiving partial or full funding from an industry partner
- Formal Training: Completing programs that prepare you for industry work (Intellectual Property, leadership/management, commercialisation)
- Other Engagement Activities: R&D consultancy, entrepreneurship, community outreach, or short internships (less than 30 days)
When candidates notify the Graduate Research School, additional details will be requested which need to be recorded in the student file and included in mandatory government reporting. Students should contact the Graduate Research School via AskUNE, with the subject title "Research Engagement activity".
