Text and artistic material

UNE teaching staff can copy and communicate the following content under the Educational Statutory Licence:

  • text - literary, dramatic and musical works (but not computer programs)
  • artistic works

Text

Textual material can be reproduced from both hard copy and digital format e.g. from the internet, not licensed or purchased via the library's subscriptions. Copying limits apply for textual material reproduced in reliance of the Educational Statutory Licence. Further, all reproductions of textual material made in reliance of the Educational Statutory Licence must be managed and communicated using Reading List. UNE has a remuneration agreement with the Copyright Agency Limited for the use of textual and artistic material under the Educational Statutory Licence.

Artistic material

Artistic material such as photographs, cartoons, maps, icons and other artworks copied in reliance of the Educational Statutory Licence must be for valid educational purposes, rather than mere decorative purposes. All artistic works must be properly attributed.

If you want to use artistic material in ways that may not be considered educational (for example to enhance the look of the page) one of the following needs to apply:

  • you own copyright and grant the university a non-exclusive right to use it
  • copyright has expired, so the work is out-of-copyright
  • the image has been released under a Creative Commons licence
  • you have permission from the copyright owner to use it in this way.

How to attribute

Marking or attributing artistic material can save further investigation and complies with moral rights. The following table provides examples of attributions

Example: material used with permission of the copyright owner

'Title of image', Photographer: A. Lecturer. Used with permission, all rights reserved.

Example: UNE owned copyright material

'Title of image', Photographer: A. Lecturer. © University of New England 2023. All rights reserved.

Example: material has been reproduced under the Educational Statutory Licence

'Title of image', Created by: B. Someone else. Retrieved from <insert URL or print source>. All rights reserved.
