Copyright assignment and licensing

When you publish your work, it is important to identify and understand what rights you retain or give away. Licence conditions affect authors, their employer and end-users regarding the use and re-use of content.

Publishing a work that you have created, for example, a book or research article, requires thoughtful consideration about whether the exclusive rights held by the copyright owner should be:

  • transferred to another person or organisation through an assignment
  • retained by the copyright owner and licensed.

UNE Knowledge Assets and Intellectual Property policy

UNE staff should note that, under the terms of the UNE Knowledge Assets and Intellectual Property policy, books and other scholarly works which University staff wish to publish must be disclosed to the University and approved for publication as designated in the appropriate discipline area.

A licence for copyright material can often be very detailed, so it is important to seek legal advice to look over the terms including whether any warranties apply.
