UNE students are being encouraged to use Trimester 3 (T3) to accelerate progress, balance workloads, and keep momentum over summer. We reached out to some of our academics' insights on the benefits of summer studying.
Professors Sujana Adapa and Rene Villano.
“Enrol in Trimester 3, spread the study load, accelerate your course progression as a pathway to graduate faster and to expedite your career journey,” said Professor Sujana Adapa, Executive Dean of the Faculty of Science, Agriculture, Business and Law. “Trimester 3 allows for maintaining academic momentum, efficient use of the calendar, deeper understanding of subject content and flexible interactions with subject matter experts.”
Including better workload management and faster completion, Trimester 3’s extra study window “provides students with greater flexibility and choice, enriching their academic journey and overall university experience,” says Head of the UNE Business School, Professor Rene Villano.
Professor Fran Cowley.
“Studying in Trimester 3 allows you to reduce your load in Trimester 1 and 2 while maintaining full-time status… Many T3 units are fully online, so you can head home or away on holidays while continuing your study momentum. Block F units let you finish in just six weeks, freeing up your summer,” says Professor Fran Cowley (Environmental and Rural Science) when highlighting the practicalities.
Senior Lecturer, Dr Hayley Farrel.
“Our Graduate Certificate in School Psychology allows current and recent postgraduates to complete two specialised units over summer – equipping you to support school communities from the start of the 2026 school year,” says School of Psychology Senior Lecturer, Dr Hayley Farrel when discussing a targeted pathway available in T3.
Lecturer Shara Smith.
“It’s a flexible way to build skills, maintain momentum, and make steady progress toward graduation,” says School of Health Counselling Discipline Lead, Lecturer Shara Smith.
Professor Sue Gregory.
“Fast-track completion, catch a needed unit in T3, and make the most of work–life downtime to complete an extra unit or two,” said Head of the School of Education Professor Sue Gregory, urging students to seize a quieter period.
Studying in Trimester 3 is a smart way to make summer count. It helps you keep academic momentum, spread your workload more evenly across the year, and, if you choose; fast‑track to graduation. For those on professional pathways, T3 provides a focused route to be job‑ready sooner.
