Jai Meynadier Tackles Social Media Addiction with RTP Scholarship Support

Jai Meynadier, a PhD student at the University of New England (UNE), is investigating the growing issue of social media addiction and its impact on mental health. Supported by the Australian Government Research Training Program (RTP) Scholarship, Jai’s research explores the personality traits that may predispose individuals to social media addiction, the psychological processes involved, and potential treatment strategies.

“Given the widespread use of social media, especially among children and adolescents, this research is critical,” Jai explains. “Emerging studies suggest that frequent social media use could have negative consequences on neurodevelopment and mental health. Understanding these factors is key to addressing the issue.”

Originally from the Northern Rivers region of NSW, Jai moved to Armidale after completing an undergraduate degree in Melbourne. Inspired by a family friend who spoke highly of UNE’s supportive and connected academic environment, Jai pursued an advanced graduate diploma at UNE to prepare for a PhD.

The RTP Scholarship has been instrumental in Jai’s academic journey, providing the financial stability needed to focus entirely on research.

“The scholarship allowed me to work full-time on my PhD without financial stress. “It gave me the right living conditions to succeed - I could rent a place by myself and work remotely, free from distraction,” he says.

The scholarship also enabled Jai to take on additional opportunities, such as teaching, tutoring, and collaborating on research projects. “It gave me the flexibility to focus on work that’s most relevant to my career, rather than taking on jobs just to make ends meet.”

While applying for the RTP Scholarship was challenging, Jai credits hard work and collaboration with a supervisor for success. “I worked hard during my advanced graduate diploma to get the grades I needed,” Jai says. “I also brainstormed project ideas with my supervisor to develop a research proposal that was both feasible and interesting.”

For students considering applying for the RTP Scholarship, Jai offers simple advice: “Do it! The scholarship gives you the flexibility to focus on your thesis and expand your skillset through part-time academic work. Build a strong relationship with your supervisor - they’ll be key to keeping you on track during the ups and downs of the PhD journey.”

Reflecting on the experience, Jai highlights the support received at UNE and the benefits of living in Armidale. “UNE has been fantastic, and I’ve learned so much from the people around me. Armidale has grown on me - it’s a lovely place to live.”

Jai’s story is part of UNE’s RTP Scholarship series, showcasing the remarkable research and achievements of its Higher Degree by Research students.
