Breaking Barriers: UNE PhD Student Explores Integrative Mental Health Solutions in Ethiopia

Alemayehu, who holds a BSc in Mental Health Nursing and a Master’s in Clinical and Community Mental Health, is investigating how traditional healing approaches can be integrated with modern treatments to address Ethiopia’s significant mental health care challenges.

“Mental illness is a major concern in low and middle-income countries like Ethiopia,” says Alemayehu. “Due to stigma, political instability, and limited access to mental health services, many people rely on traditional healers. However, the lack of collaboration between traditional and modern practitioners often leads to delays in treatment and poor clinical outcomes.”

His research aims to explore attitudes, practices, and challenges surrounding integration, while identifying opportunities to create culturally appropriate strategies for collaboration.

“Integrating these systems could reduce the substantial treatment gap for mental health problems in Ethiopia and other developing countries,” he says.

Supported by the RTP International Stipend Scholarship, Alemayehu has been able to fully dedicate himself to his research. “The scholarship has been transformative.”

“It has allowed me to focus entirely on my studies without the financial stress of living expenses. Within seven months, my candidacy was confirmed, and I’ve already published two literature review articles in international journals.”

The scholarship has also enabled Alemayehu to conduct fieldwork in Ethiopia, covering travel expenses and data collection fees. “Without this support, my research would have been delayed or compromised.”

Alemayehu encourages prospective students to consider applying for the RTP Scholarship and pursuing HDR studies at UNE. “UNE offers an excellent learning environment with accessible facilities and supportive supervisors,” he says. “If your first application isn’t successful, don’t give up - refine your approach and try again. Persistence pays off.”

As he continues his PhD journey, Alemayehu is optimistic about the impact of his research. “I hope to co-design culturally appropriate integration strategies in my postdoctoral work.”.

“This is an opportunity to make a meaningful contribution to mental health care in Ethiopia and beyond.”
