Johnson Lu Johnson Lu has made an interesting career pivot from content marketing to data science, bringing his creative mindset to the technical world of AI. Based in the Liverpool/Campbelltown area of southwest NSW, Johnson is currently studying at UNE while exploring the exciting possibilities of artificial intelligence.

"I always thought of myself as the 'creative' type," Johnson says. "I didn't think data science would be my thing. But when ChatGPT and other AI developments came along, I couldn't resist learning more."

Johnson chose UNE for its flexible study options, allowing him to maintain a healthy work-life-study balance. What surprised him was discovering a newfound appreciation for mathematics and statistics, sparked by engaging professors and mentors at the university.

His standout achievement is being a winner of UNE's LabNext70 competition with a practical chatbot designed to answer questions about UNE's Master of Data Science course.

"The idea came after waiting on hold with student services for nearly half an hour just to ask a simple question," he says. "I thought a chatbot could help both students and staff save valuable time."

This win led to an internship with LabNext70, which has evolved into a casual remote position focusing on prompt engineering and AI agent design. Johnson is now creating AI solutions for various UNE departments, working alongside experienced professionals in the field.

Outside of technology, Johnson maintains his creative interests in art, illustration, graphic design, music and fashion design.

Looking ahead, he's considering research opportunities and possibly a PhD. "I'd be happy wherever I can follow my curiosity," he says.

Johnson believes in the positive impact of AI when used responsibly: "AI has been a great study aid for me. It helps everyone work more efficiently, freeing up time for the things we truly enjoy."
