Finding a tailored way to help each student she interacts with is Beth Boland’s daily motivation, as an academic skills coordinator and TRACKS group tutor at UNE Tamworth.

With a background in education, including work overseas and with a not-for-profit, she has a passion for helping students learn and succeed, and says Tamworth is the perfect place to achieve that.

“The role is fulfilling because of the interactions with students, thinking through the best way to provide support to students, and learning more about the context of the New England region,” she says.

“Being a part of the Tamworth team is amazing – they are motivated, dynamic and committed to supporting and assisting UNE students, along with creating a vibrant environment for the local community.”

Beth moved to the regional city about 15 months ago with her husband and two small children.

Beth says the shift to regional Australia has been a welcome tree-change after she'd been a city resident most of her life.

Before, she’d worked in primary and high schools in teaching and curriculum roles; taught English at a Bondi language centre; worked to support teachers at an international school in Jakarta; and supported teachers and school leaders across Indonesia through a not-for-profit organisation during her time there.

The shift to Tamworth was a welcome tree-change after having been a city resident most of her life, and Beth is loving her role of ensuring that Tamworth region students have access to the academic support they need.

She runs workshops and tutorials on academic skills such as time management, understanding assignment questions and revision strategies, and also acts as a conduit for students to access further services where needed.

Beth says she finds it “fulfilling to support and assist students” and is thrilled to see it’s having an impact.

“The feedback from surveys is that students find the support ‘really helpful for the beginner’ and ‘very informative’.

UNE Tamworth will be instrumental in equipping students, both online and from this region, to thrive in this rapidly changing world.

“One student – who has now graduated – was thankful I connected them with a first-year advisor while they were studying a law subject, and they went on to get a fabulous grade for their assignment."

Beth says she’s excited to see the expansion of UNE Tamworth’s facilities and offerings taking shape.

“UNE Tamworth will be instrumental in equipping students, both online and from this region, to thrive in this rapidly changing world.

“It will ensure the Tamworth region is more engaged in higher education and promote a healthy community. The expansion should also create employment for those in the regi
