Getting a university education should be open to everyone – but finance can sometimes be a barrier. Fortunately, UNE and our generous donors offer many scholarships that could make all the difference. These UNE students have kindly shared how it’s made a difference to them.

Name: Emily Baylis
Degree:
Bachelor of Agriculture/Bachelor of Business
Scholarship:
Robb College Foundation – Darren Ellis Memorial Scholarship

“It was such a relief when I heard my scholarship application was successful. I had been working part-time since I started university in 2018, in Adelaide initially, then at UNE. The scholarship allowed me to reduce my work hours and dedicate more time to my studies, as well as to the college community in my role as a Resident Tutor at Robb College.

“I was coming into my third year living at Robb College when I heard about the Darren Ellis Memorial Scholarship, and as I’d just become a Resident Tutor, I thought I would apply. It seemed a good opportunity, and it aligned with my values and past achievements.

“I became familiar with Darren’s story through the application process. I was also privileged to meet some of Darren’s college friends at our Robb Scholarship Dinner.

I feel really honoured and grateful to have received this scholarship.

"I feel really honoured and grateful to have received this scholarship. It’s lifted the financial pressure off me so I’ve been able to reduce my work hours and contribute more to our college.

“I love being at UNE – particularly the down-to-earth people at Robb. I’ve really enjoyed the opportunity to have a good tertiary education in a country setting, rather than the city.

“My advice to anyone considering applying for a scholarship is just to do it! It’s a really motivating way to become more involved in your community and sport, and it really relieves the pressure financially. The application process is also a great way to refine the skills involved in applying, especially for job interviews.”
