Public Information

The University provides public access to records and information under the provisions of the State Records Act 1988 and the Government information (Public Access) Act 2009 . The Privacy and Personal Information Act 1998 and the Health Records and Information Privacy Act 2002 also regulate public access to particular types of information held by the University.

The Government Information (Public Access) Act 2009 (NSW) (GIPA Act) facilitates access to information by public sector agencies in New South Wales, including the University of New England.

It may not be necessary for you to make an application for information under the GIPA Act (also known as a GIPA application). The University makes a great deal of information public, including our policiesannual reports, strategic plan and open-access information.

Archives are records we have selected to keeping for an indefinite period on the basis of its cultural, historical and/or evidentiary value. This may be for legislative requirements or it may be based on the University’s own requirements.

Historical Information

The UNE Regional Archives & Heritage Centre,  located in central Armidale, holds a collection of publicly available documents the history and heritage of the New England region.

State Records

State records are open to public access after 20 years unless the record is subject to an early access authorisation or a closed to public access direction.

  • Early access authorisation: Public offices can make access directions to open some records before they are 20 years of age
  • Closed to public access direction (CPA): Public offices can also make access directions to close some records to public access for longer than 20 years to protect sensitive information. A CPA direction remains in force for 5 years - at which time it can be renewed or revoked by the agency.

The University must comply with relevant privacy legislation.  Enquiries relating to privacy, the handling of personal information or personal information requests should be directed to our UNE Privacy Officer.

Removal or correction of personal information

You can request that personal information held by UNE is corrected or removed by contacting the UNE Privacy Officer.

A data breach occurs when a failure or potential failure causes unauthorized access to UNE’s data. When this access involves the unauthorised access to, disclosure of or loss of personal information of UNE’s staff, student’s or community members, it can cause serious harm to individuals.

Research UNE is the repository for research outputs of the University of New England. The collection contains research outputs, published papers, thesis, creative works and researcher profiles.
