How do I Graduate in September 2012?

STEP 1 Your academic record is assessed to determine whether you are eligible to graduate

STEP 2 Students determined eligible to graduate will have an invitation to attend the ceremony sent to their UNE email account.

Before Graduation assessments are made, it is important that your personal and course details are correct. 

Please check the following:

  1. The course you are being assessed for graduation is correct: Correct Course
  2. The course majors and specialisations that appear on your academic transcript and Testamur are correct: Majors and Unit sets
  3. Your Personal Details are correct:  Name and address

Please check your UNE email account. All students who indicated their intention to complete their studies in the middle of 2012 will receive an email sent to their UNE account by the end of May advising they are being assessed for the graduation in September 2012.

If you have not received an email by the end of May advising that you are being assessed for Graduation but believe you may be eligible to graduate in September 2012, please complete the graduation eligibility assessment form . Please note: You do NOT need to complete this form if you have received an email advising that you are eligible to graduate.

Graduation eligibility will be confirmed after final grades are released. Eligible graduands will receive an invitation to attend the graduation ceremony.  The invitation will be sent to your UNE email account.

Graduation Ceremony Details

Ceremony

  • The Graduation ceremonies are held on the southern lawns of Booloominbah. As the ceremonies are held outside, graduands and their guests are advised to bring sunscreen and a drink. The ceremony begins at 10.30am sharp.  For this to occur, we ask that all graduands be seated by 10.15am.  The ceremony lasts approximately two hours. Those graduating must remain seated for the duration of the ceremony. 

Registration for Seating 

  • Graduands attending the ceremony need to register on the day to have their seat number assigned to them.
  • Registration opens just after 8.00am. The registration tent will be located on the Booloominbah lawn—east of the graduand seating area. Graduands attending a ceremony must register at least one hour prior to the commencement of their ceremony. All graduands are asked to be seated 15 minutes before the commencement of their ceremony.
  • Once registered, please do not leave the campus.
  • Academic dress, as appropriate for the awards of the University, must be worn.

Guests

  • The ceremony is held outdoors so you may bring as many guests as you wish. 
  • Disabled and elderly guests may be dropped off at the disabled parking bay near Booloominbah. Security personnel will be available to help them to the graduation ceremony area. 

Restriction on Access to Graduation Area 

  • Apart from those participating in the ceremony and official photographers, no persons will be permitted to remain in the area set aside for the Graduation ceremony.

Ceremony Procedures and Etiquette

Order of Proceedings

  • After the Chancellor has opened the proceedings, the Chancellor will ask the Vice-Chancellor to present any candidates for the award of degrees honoris causa.The Occasional Address will then be delivered. There will be a five minute musical interlude.
  • After the Musical Interlude, the Chair of the Academic Board rises and says to the Chancellor, the graduands now standing:
  • Chancellor, I submit to you a list of candidates, as listed in the programme, who have completed all requirements and are entitled to be admitted to their respective academic degrees and awards.
  • The Chancellor responds, and the graduands remain standing:
  • In the name of the Council and by my authority as Chancellor I admit these candidates to their respective degrees and awards.
  • The graduates are now asked to be seated. The Chair of the Academic Board then reads out the attributes of the New England Award and acknowledges those present who are receiving the award.
  • The graduates newly admitted to the degree of Doctor of Philosophy who are present are now individually presented to the Chancellor by the Chair of the Academic Board, who says:
  • Chancellor, I have the honour to present to you those candidates newly admitted to the degree of Doctor of Philosophy who are able to be present at this ceremony.
  • The Chair of the Academic Board reads out the names of the candidates for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy. As the candidates names are read out the candidates move to a position in front of the Chancellor where they acknowledge the Chancellor by doffing their caps. The Chancellor shakes their hand and the candidates then return to their seats.
  • After the presentation of the candidates for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy the candidates for the Masters Degrees, Graduate Diplomas, Graduate Certificates, Bachelor degrees, and Diplomas/Certificates are presented in the order in which they are listed in the Official Programme. All graduands should acknowledge the Chancellor on presentation, by doffing their caps.
  • At the conclusion of the ceremony the Esquire Bedell will lead the Chancellor and the academic procession from the dais. Graduates are asked to stand as the procession leaves, joining in the procession to follow the academics.

Accommodation

Graduands and their guests are advised to book their accommodation as soon as they have their graduation eligibility confirmed, as there is usually a shortage of accommodation in the region during the Graduation weekend.

Attending your Graduation Ceremony

  • An invitation to attend your graduation ceremony will be emailed to those eligible via your UNE email account after final grades are made available. Please check the following link for details about the release of grades: http://www.une.edu.au/exams/#item7.
  • Your Australian Higher Education Graduation Statement (AHEGS) will be forwarded by post approximately 4 weeks following the ceremony.

What will happen to my degree if I cannot attend the ceremony? 

  • Testamurs and Australian Higher Education Graduation Statements (AHEGS) will be sent by registered post to Graduates unable to attend their graduation ceremony.  This process takes approximately 4 weeks after the graduation ceremony has taken place. It is therefore important that your name and address are recorded correctly.  Please check that your address details are correct.

Wet Weather

In the event of extreme weather conditions the ceremony is moved indoors to Lazenby Hall and may be split into a morning (10.30am) for surnames A - J and afternoon (2.30pm) ceremony for surnames K - Z. Registration for the afternoon ceremony commences at 1pm. In these cases only two guests can view the ceremony in the Hall, additional guests may view the ceremony from an adjacent theatre. As wet weather is a possibility, graduands and their families need to allow the entire day for their graduation ceremony

 

How do I obtain a replacement Testamur (degree)?

To obtain a replacement for your lost or damaged testamur, you must apply in writing to:

Graduations and Timetabling,
Student Administration and Services,
University of New England,
Armidale, NSW, 2351

Lost Testamur

Please supply:

  • Letter requesting replacement including an explanation of the circumstances behind the loss of the Testamur.
  • Statutory Declaration stating that your Testamur has been irretrievably lost or destroyed. This must be witnessed by a Justice of the Peace.
  • Fee of $90.00* for each testamur must accompany the application.

Damaged Testamur

  • Letter requesting replacement Testamur
  • The Original damaged Testamur
  • Fee of $90.00* for each testamur must accompany the application.
