At the School of Environmental and Rural Science (ERS), our aim is to equip talented people with the skills to enable them to Save the Planet and Feed the World. At UNE you will study with the best and be taught by the best.

In the School of ERS we explore how the Earth shapes our activities and how our activity shapes the Earth. In a period of uncertainty regarding climates, growing populations seeking more food and more water, and increased mining of the earth’s natural resources, we are fast approaching a point where our usage of the planet is unsustainable.

The degrees on offer within the School of ERS provide the essential knowledge to help you develop strategies to monitor the health of a wide variety of ecosystems. They will enable you to gain a deep understanding of the science behind agriculture and food production, ecosystem sustainability, geology and environmental engineering. Delivered on campus and online – UNE is Australia’s most experienced distance education provider – our courses and teaching methods are structured to be flexible to suit your lifestyle.

We are one of the largest and most respected agriculture and environmental science schools in Australia. With over 85 academics, 100 postgraduate students and approaching 1000 undergraduates, the School of ERS has leading edge facilities, including farms covering all aspects of agricultural and environmental science. At UNE you will find all you require: natural resources, animal science, plant science, zoology, agronomy, soils, geology and environmental engineering.

We also have a number of partnerships with industry, as well as three industry-funded Cooperative Research Centres (CRCs for Beef, Sheep and Poultry) located on-campus. UNE has significant interaction and funding arrangements with other CRCs (Cotton, Spatial Information), and long-term collaborations with many Australian and international companies. This interaction means your degree will be job-ready and has resulted in UNE graduates being highly sought after in a range of industries across Australia and beyond.

UNE is consistently awarded the top rating (five stars) in The Good Universities Guide for “graduate satisfaction”. UNE has achieved this rating for 10 out of the past 11 years - an achievement matched by no other Australian university. UNE is also in the top three universities in terms of generating commercial income from the science it produces and it was recognised in the best teaching category for Science,Computing, Engineering and Agriculture in the Federal Government’s 2009 Learning and Teaching Performance assessment.
