Unit information
This unit is framed by a broad concept of children’s resilience. By introducing strategies to effectively observe children, you will document and interpret these observations for planning learning opportunities.
From observing, you will deepen your understanding of your responsibilities for ensuring children’s rights related to health, safety, development and wellbeing (mental, emotional, social and physical). You will also explore food and nutrition, hygiene and physical activity.
This unit focuses on children from birth to age five years.

Learning outcomes
Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
- observe children to document and interpret observations of their health, safety and wellbeing (mental, emotional, social and physical); (CS 1.1, 1.3, 1.4, 1.5, 1.6, 2.1, 2.4, 2.5, 3.1, 3.8, 4.2, 4.3, 4.4, 5.2, 5.3);
- use observational data to plan in an ethical manner how young children's rights relating to health, safety and wellbeing are met; (CS 1.1, 1.3, 1.4, 1.5, 1.6, 2.1, 2.2, 2.3, 2.4, 2.5, 3.1, 3.6, 3.8, 3.9, 4.3, 4.4, 5.1, 5.3);
- discuss issues about children's health, safety and wellbeing with other staff and families (CS 1.1, 1.3, 1.4, 1.6, 2.1, 4.3, 5.1, 5.4, 5.5, 6.1, 6.9);
- identify their role as an early childhood professional who supports children's resilience through health, safety and wellbeing; and (CS 2.4, 3.1, 3.6, 5.2, 5.3, 6.3); and
- demonstrate professional standards of communication and literacy (CS 3.4, 5.3, 6.3).
