Unit information
This unit is designed to build your knowledge of the development of European nations and nationalism between the French Revolution and the First World War.
Key themes include the development of the modern European system of nation-states, the influences of the 'old regime', revolts against the state and state reaction, the growth of national consciousness, imperialism, warfare and preparations for war as well as the impact of industrialisation and the emergence of ideologies which challenged the orthodoxy of nationalism.
You will also examine several case studies such as Revolutionary and Napoleonic France, the ‘Age of Metternich’, Risorgimento Italy, the German Kaiserreich, the British Empire, the Russian Empire, Marxism and Feminism, and the state of Europe as it entered the Great War.
This unit complements the knowledge gained in HIST111 and HIST113 but can also be studied as a standalone unit.

There are two options for Assessment 2 and Assessment 3.
Students who choose to complete Assessment 2 Option A must complete Assessment 3 Option A.
Students who choose to complete Assessment 2 Option B must complete Assessment 3 Option B.

Learning outcomes
Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
- display knowledge and understanding of the course of European history, 1789-1914, with particular reference to the case studies discussed;
- display knowledge and understanding of the concept of 'nation' and nationalism within the context of major theoretical discourses;
- interpret and evaluate a variety of documentary historical sources;
- identify, engage with, and analyse an historical question through their assessment tasks;
- write and present well-constructed, properly-referenced history essays; and
- communicate effectively their comprehension of various issues and topics related to the history of nineteenth century Europe.
