Teaching Languages in the Primary School (EDLA330)

Learning outcomes

Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:

1. demonstrate understanding of the relevant and appropriate sources of professional learning for themselves as teachers of languages and cultures, including the understanding of the complexity of languages teaching contexts and professional standards for accomplished teaching of languages and cultures, the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers and through engagement with professional communities of practice (GTSD 6.1.1, 6.2.1, 6.4.1);
2. demonstrate knowledge and understanding of current trends and issues in languages teaching and learning (GTSD 2.1.1);
3. set language and culture learning goals, plan lesson sequence and include a range of context-relevant, research-evidenced and theoretically informed teaching strategies for primary school students in Australian schools (GTSD 3.1.1, 3.2.1, 3.3.1, 3.4.1); and
4. demonstrate knowledge and understanding of research into how students learn, differentiated teaching strategies to cater for diverse learners in Australian schools, including relevant and stimulating concepts and topics; language, culture and intercultural components; and appropriate assessment, feedback and reporting (GTSD 1.2.1, 1.5.1, 4.1.1, 5.1.1, 5.2.1, 5.5.1).
