Unit information
Creative writing is a process that draws on experience, research, craft, feedback and revision.
This unit is an introduction to writing creative narratives. It will introduce you to essential storytelling techniques and provide a vocabulary for understanding the craft of constructing narratives that reflect genre conventions and reader expectations.
You will learn skills in creative writing through constructing a story that is inspired by a theme such as place.
In this unit you will be guided through the stages of developing an idea, designing, drafting and editing a story. You will explore how selected authors portray places, events, characters and themes.

Learning outcomes
Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
- identify the principles and techniques of storytelling in a selected genre;
- apply techniques of storywriting effectively in developing a concept for a short writing project;
- apply a working understanding of the role of reading and research in genre writing; and
- apply the principles and techniques of revision and editing appropriate to a selected genre and readership.
