Secondary Music Pedagogy Y11-12 (EDAE397)

Learning outcomes

Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:

1. demonstrate the knowledge base underpinning the principles and practices of Years 11–12 music teaching, including how to prepare students for their Years 11-12 Music (HSC) exams and understanding the needs of students from diverse backgrounds and different musical abilities (GTSD 1.2.1, 1.3.1, 1.5.1);
2. demonstrate understanding of the curriculum requirements of the NSW Stage 6 Syllabus Music 1 and Music 2 and Music Extension and the Years 11-12 music teaching content for performance (singing, playing instruments), musicology, and composing, which comprise key concepts and structure, designing content using curriculum and assessment, and strategies for using ICT (GTSD 2.1.1, 2.3.1, 2.6.1);
3. demonstrate effective pedagogical approaches for Years 11-12 music teaching by developing achievable goals, appropriate lesson sequences, and a range of teaching strategies and resources (GTSD 3.1.1, 3.2.1, 3.3.1, 3.4.1);
4. demonstrate pedagogical skills and knowledge for creating a safe and supportive classroom environment for Years 11-12 music by incorporating core performance activities in which all students participate, providing clear directions for external music exams, managing challenging behaviours, and requiring ethical use of ICT (GTSD 4.1.1, 4.2.1, 4.3.1, 4.5.1); and
5. demonstrate pedagogical skills and knowledge for applying internal and external assessments for Y11-12 music, and conducting consistent and comparable judgements of student learning in performance, musicology, and composition (GTSD 5.1.1, 5.3.1).
