Secondary Education: Society and Culture (EDSS325)

Learning outcomes

Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:

1. interpret, critically analyse and evaluate NSW secondary school syllabus and support materials in Stage 6 Society and Culture and the Life Skills curriculum including their aim, objectives, outcomes, content, course requirements and central concepts (GTSD 1.6.1, 2.1.1);
2. plan teaching and learning units of work and learning activities consistent with the syllabus requirements, models of pedagogy (inquiry and direct instruction) and the principles and practices underpinning teaching and learning in Society and Culture to produce learning experiences that meet the needs of diverse learners (GTSD 1.5.1, 2.2.1, 3.1.1, 3.2.1, 3.6.1);
3. plan and incorporate a range of assessment strategies into classwork and programs consistent with School Certificate and Higher School Certificate requirements, linking outcomes, learning activities and assessment, to provide assessment data to inform student learning and report as required (GTSD 2.3.1, 3.3.1, 5.1.1, 5.2.1);
4. relate current issues and curriculum policies, such as literacy, numeracy, financial literacy, civics and citizenship and values education, ethics and sustainability to planned teaching and learning activities (GTSD 2.3.1, 2.5.1); and
5. understand the relationship and role of parents and the community in teaching society and culture, including evaluating online resources for their application to improve student learning (GTSD 3.4.1, 3.7.1, 7.4.1).
