Unit information
Develop your practical teaching skills to become a professional and capable teacher of Legal Studies and Commerce for secondary school students. You will start your teaching career with confidence.
In this unit you will develop and implement Legal Studies and Commerce teaching strategies for both junior and senior secondary HSIE classrooms. You will learn to critically examine and interpret the NSW school syllabus for these subjects and reflect upon their relationship to the broader school curriculum.
You will learn how to plan engaging units of work for your future students and devise teaching and assessment strategies that meet the needs of diverse learners. This includes relating current issues and curriculum policies such as literacy, numeracy, financial literacy, civics and citizenship and values education, ethics and sustainability.

This unit addresses Australian Professional Standards for Teachers at the Graduate Stage, otherwise referred to as Graduate Teacher Standard Descriptors (GTSD).

Learning outcomes
Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
- demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the concepts, substance and structure of the content and teaching strategies of Stage 6 Legal Studies and Years 7–10 Commerce. (GTSD 2.1.1);
- organise syllabus content into effective teaching and learning sequences and lesson plans which demonstrate knowledge of curriculum, assessment and reporting as well as civics and citizenship teaching strategies applicable to Stage 6 Legal Studies and Years 7–10 Commerce. (GTSD 2.2.1, 2.3.1, 3.2.1);
- incorporate a range of teaching strategies including ICT, that are responsive to the learning strengths and needs of students across the full range of abilities and backgrounds to engage and expand their curriculum learning. (GTSD 1.3.1, 1.5.1, 2.6.1, 3.1.1, 3.3.1, 3.4.1); and
- demonstrate a capacity to design assessment tasks, provide timely feedback to students on their learning, and interpret assessment data to evaluate student learning and modify teaching practice. (GDST 5.1.1, 5.4.1).
