Research-Based Secondary Music Pedagogy (EDAE398)

Learning outcomes

Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:

1. demonstrate research-based knowledge and understanding of musical creativity, using videoconferencing, and other research topics for music teaching and learning, and of how students learn music, why students learn music in the ways they do, and how diverse backgrounds and different abilities of students may affect the way they learn music (GTSD 1.1.1, 1.2.1, 1.3.1, 1.5.1);
2. demonstrate in-depth understanding of the research findings on musical creativity, videoconferencing, the psychology of music teaching and learning, and the psychology of music performance in order to apply them to designing teaching content (GTSD 2.1.1, 2.6.1);
3. demonstrate research-based knowledge and understanding in planning and implementing secondary classroom music teaching, including achievable goals, lesson sequences, and a range of pedagogical strategies and teaching resources (GTSD 3.1.1, 3.3.1, 3.4.1);
4. demonstrate pedagogical skills and knowledge for creating a safe and supportive classroom environment for secondary music by incorporating musical activities that all students can do and providing clear directions for classroom activities (GTSD 4.1.1, 4.2.1); and
5. demonstrate pedagogical skills and knowledge for using informal and formal assessments and conducting consistent and comparable judgements of secondary students’ musical activities (GTSD 5.1.1, 5.3.1).
