Unit information
Musicians develop and pass on technical skills through practice and demonstration. Understanding the communication practices which occur between music teacher and music student is therefore critical for developing musicians or musicians wanting to move into teaching.
In this unit you will focus on pedagogical skills for teaching in a studio environment. All aspects of instrumental and vocal pedagogy will be studied, specifically those of your principal instrument or voice.
Technique, practice and ensemble skills will be explored. Specific topics will include lesson planning, design and evaluation of student assessment, innovative teaching methods, the use of technology, and traditional teaching resources including choosing appropriate repertoire. You will also learn how to provide constructive feedback to your students.

Learning outcomes
Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
- communicate a personal philosophy of instrumental or vocal tuition;
- synthesise a range of teaching approaches, materials, resources and technologies for studio teaching;
- develop appropriate lesson designs including planning, teaching, assessment and evaluation; and
- use constructive criticism and informed response methods to provide feedback to students both in the studio and amongst peers.
