Unit information

UNE student studies on a laptop on her lounge at home

Building on your foundational pharmaceutical science knowledge, this unit extends your understanding of drug chemistry, formulation principles, and pharmaceutical calculations in modern pharmacy practice. In this unit, you will examine how the functional groups of drugs influence physicochemical properties, drug stability, and pharmacokinetics – knowledge essential for effective medication design and delivery.

You’ll connect chemical structure to pharmaceutical formulation, investigating how solubility, ionisation, and reactivity shape drug performance. The unit also covers pharmaceutical rheology, colloids, suspensions, and particle size, equipping you to assess how these factors impact dosage form design.

By the end of this unit, you’ll be ready to critically evaluate the role of drug chemistry in pharmaceutical sciences and confidently apply your skills to real-world formulation challenges.

Learning outcomes

Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:

  1. describe the role of functional groups in drug molecules and how they influence solubility, ionisation and reactivity;
  2. explain how key physicochemical properties such as pH, buffers, isotonicity, and osmolarity affect pharmaceutical formulation stability and sterility;
  3. apply knowledge of colloids, suspensions, and particle size in the design and evaluation of pharmaceutical dosage forms;
  4. perform pharmaceutical calculations related to pH adjustments, buffer preparation, and solubility enhancement;
  5. demonstrate proficiency in scientific problem-solving and data interpretation in pharmaceutical formulation and drug chemistry.

Studying online

At UNE we know it takes more than just being online to be a great online university. It takes time and experience. We pioneered distance education for working adults back in the 1950s, so we’ve been doing this longer than any other Australian university.

We understand the challenges faced by busy adults studying at home. We know that a vital part of online study is your engagement with the learning community. Communication with your classmates, teaching staff and university support staff will enhance your study experience and ensure that your skills extend beyond the subject matter. UNE’s teaching staff are experts in their field which is why UNE consistently receives five stars from students for teaching quality, support and overall experience.*
