Unit information
As Australia’s population ages and healthcare needs become more complex, your ability to understand the many factors that impact care delivery for older people is important in your role as a nurse. Through case-based scenarios, you will explore the registered nurse’s roles and responsibilities in a healthcare setting for the elderly.
This unit will consolidate your knowledge and understanding of better health outcomes framed by legal, ethical and policy influences that impact care for older people. Reflecting on the role of the registered nurse within residential and community aged care in Australia, you will draw on psychosocial perspectives of ageing, theoretical frameworks, and evidence-based practice. A regional, national, and global lens will be applied to understand how aged care nursing practice is continually evolving.

Learning outcomes
Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
- understand and apply the Aged Care Quality Standards to nursing practice;
- examine the psychosocial perspectives of aging and critically evaluate how these impact care provision for older persons regionally, nationally and globally;
- critically explore and apply the principles of healthy and positive ageing in person-centred nursing practice for older adults;
- critically evaluate the role of the registered nurse in assessing, planning, implementing and evaluating nursing care for an older person in a range of healthcare settings including the quality use of medicines; and
- critically evaluate the ways nurses and the profession contribute to health outcomes associated with the rights, challenges and concerns for older people.
