Unit information
Mental health promotion is part of the wider field of health promotion and, alongside prevention and treatment of mental health problems, is a key tool for the delivery of holistic person-centred mental health care.
Health promotion aims to enable and empower people to increase control over and improve their health. This unit introduces you to the key models and theories of health promotion and their application to mental health.
Exploring mental health promotion, prevention and early intervention strategies and methods, you will develop advanced understanding of key health promotion principles and theoretical concepts.
The unit will help you to become an agent of change, with skills for promoting mental health and wellbeing, as well as preventing mental illness, across the lifespan. You be equipped to make recommendations for mental health promotion programs, with a deep understanding of the importance of early detection and resilience for mental health and wellbeing.

Learning outcomes
Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
- demonstrate a critical understanding of the key models and theories of health promotion as they are applied to mental health;
- demonstrate advanced professional knowledge of mental health promotion, prevention,and early intervention strategies and methods;
- apply key health promotion principles and theoretical concepts to make recommendations for mental health promotion programs;
- communicate advanced understanding of the social, environmental and economic determinants of mental health; and
- utilise advanced critical reflection skills to enhance clinical practice in mental health.
