Unit information
Information systems are a key component of every business you will ever work in. Information systems are about getting the right information to the right person when needed, to help them make the right decision.
This can be costly and complicated to implement, but all systems must be able to use technology to deliver business value. We look at the framework of business forces, enabling technology and management potential that underpin information systems.
Bridging technology and business needs, you will develop work-ready knowledge of contemporary information systems. Topics include business strategy, intelligence and analytics, networking and cloud computing, database management, information security, digital goods and customer profiling.
Focusing on applications for business problems, you are taught how to mine real-life datasets, create data visualisations, explore data management in social media and analyse the ways to deploy cloud computing in Australian businesses.

Learning outcomes
Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
- demonstrate an in-depth understanding of principles, practices and the role of management information systems (MIS) in organisations, how IT is adopted and used in organisations;
- exhibit advanced knowledge of storing, managing, and processing data to yield relevant information in a MIS, with focus on both business process and information technology;
- demonstrate an understanding of the role that business intelligence (BI) and business analytics (BA) play in decision support system for making informed business decisions; and
- perform comparative analysis of various practical BI tools used in the industry, evaluate and critique the use of BA techniques for analysing complex information systems.
