Unit information
Ideal if you have a non-engineering background and wish to broaden your scope, this unit introduces the challenges you may encounter when planning and implementing local environmental infrastructure projects.
Using case studies and real-world examples to illustrate key environmental management and engineering principles, you will learn about some of the issues relevant to local environmental infrastructure project planning and development.
You will explore general principles and planning aspects concerning air, noise, water and land pollution, water supply, drainage and flood mitigation, solid and liquid waste disposal, resource recovery, civil infrastructure and energy supplies.
Focusing on environmental infrastructure design, construction and maintenance, the unit provides insights into current sustainability, economic, environmental, social and political challenges. You will also examine regulatory and professional ethics considerations.

Learning outcomes
Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
- describe the impacts infrastructure development has on the environment and how identified impacts can be managed using the principles of environmental management, sustainability and engineering;
- demonstrate how economic, environmental, cultural, social, political, regulatory and professional ethics influence decision making of professionals who are working on local infrastructure projects;
- explain the planning and environmental management considerations related to air, noise, water and land pollution; water treatment and reticulation; sewage conveyance and treatment; drainage and flood plain management; solid and trade waste disposal; resource recovery; civil infrastructure; and energy efficiency when designing, constructing and maintaining local infrastructure; and
- demonstrate the importance of effective communication skills, and the ability to work autonomously using their own judgement.

To pass this unit, you must achieve at least 50% in this task, and meet all other passing requirements in the unit. |
