Unit information
As humans we continually change and develop throughout our lives. Our journey is shaped by a complex interplay of biological, cognitive and psychosocial factors along with significant life issues, events and transitions.
While studying this unit, you will explore the major theories of human development, including psychoanalytic, social learning, behavioural, biological and cognitive. You will gain an understanding of the three major issues in development and critically reflect upon the differing needs of individuals at each stage of lifespan development. The importance of understanding a client’s developmental stage in the counselling context will also be examined.

Learning outcomes
Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
- define the three developmental domains of human development: physical, cognitive and psychosocial;
- understand the three major issues in development: continuity versus discontinuity; one single development course versus multiple unique courses; and nature versus nurture;
- compare and contrast the main theories of lifespan development;
- critically reflect upon the needs of individuals at different stages across the lifespan; and
- describe how a client’s life stage influences the counselling approach taken.
