Following on from EDLA385, this unit extends your knowledge about teaching languages to young people and further develops your skills for teaching and learning Languages in a range of teaching contexts.

You will explore, through a reflexive community of learners model, rationales for learning and teaching languages in a plurilingual and interconnected world, and examine a variety of approaches to learning and teaching languages.

In this unit, you will develop processes for planning and assessing effective, engaging lessons and learning tasks which facilitate Languages learning.

Learning outcomes

Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:

demonstrate reflexive skills in understanding themselves as teachers of languages and cultures and understanding the complexity of languages teaching contexts (GTSD 6.2.1);
critically evaluate current trends and issues in languages teaching and learning (GTSD 2.1.1);
develop and demonstrate a range of context-relevant, research-evidenced and theoretically informed pedagogical strategies for languages and cultures teaching (GTSD 2.5.1, 3.1.1, 3.2.1, 3.3.1, 3.4.1, 3.5.1);
design well-sequenced and engaging languages and cultures learning programs for diverse learners primarily in Australian schools, including relevant and stimulating concepts and topics; language, culture and intercultural components; and appropriate assessment (GTSD 1.2.1, 1.3.1, 1.6.1, 2.3.1, 3.1.1, 3.2.1, 3.3.1, 3.4.1, 4.1.1, 5.1.1, 5.2.1, 5.5.1); and
model and evaluate skills applicable to a professional career that reflect professional learning and professional standards for accomplished teaching of languages and cultures (GTSD 6.2.1).
