Unit information
In an era of rapid technological change and clinical innovation, pharmacists play a key role in the delivery of healthcare to the Australian community.
Studying this unit, you will be introduced to the pharmacy profession.
You will be equipped with an understanding of the legislative and professional frameworks in which pharmacy operates in Australia, whilst you develop abilities in self-management, professionalism and communication – attributes that are central to successful practice.
As you explore the diverse roles of pharmacists within the Australian healthcare system, you will learn to use professional protocols, effectively communicate accurate information, including producing accurate labels for supply, and verify medication safety by completing accurate pharmaceutical calculations.
You will also reflect on your experiences in healthcare settings and consumer perception of pharmacy.

Learning outcomes
Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
- relate the role of pharmacists within the Australian health care system to the professional and legal framework of the profession;
- demonstrate the ability to follow professional protocols and deliver effective and accurate professional communication using appropriate English language;
- reflect on experiences in healthcare settings and the impact on the perception of pharmacy;
- recognise a legal prescription and produce an accurate label for supply;
- demonstrate understanding of self-management and tools which can be used to assess and modify your own professionalism; and
- demonstrate the ability to accurately complete fundamental pharmaceutical calculations to verify the safety of medication provided by a consumer.

Assessments are subject to change up to 8 weeks prior to the start of the teaching period in which you are undertaking the unit.

| Assessment 4 - Assurance Task | Yes | 25% | All offerings | Final Examination. There is a supervised exam at the end of the teaching period in which you are enrolled. The exam will be offered online with supervision via webcam and screen sharing technology. Coordinated by UNE Exams Unit. To pass this unit, you must achieve at least 50% in this task, and meet all other passing requirements in the unit. |
