This unit provides an intensive introduction to Classical Greek and Latin, offered in two separate strands within the unit. As part of your study, you will be required to choose either Greek or Latin and will usually remain with the language strand chosen in any further units taken in the sequence. No previous knowledge of the selected language is required. In addition to exposure to the grammar of the language and to reading continuous text, you will develop your knowledge of a wide range of aspects of Greek or Roman culture and society. The unit will also improve your control and understanding of the English language.

Learning outcomes

Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:

apply reading skills to basic Greek and Latin texts;
independently apply knowledge and skills to provide solutions to questions about an ancient language;
analyse texts using an appropriate metalanguage to complete a range of activities;
communicate information about an ancient language and its social and political context; and
demonstrate technical and theoretical knowledge of an ancient language.
