Unit information
Literacy underpins all learning for children. As a future teacher, it is important that you have a depth of understanding about the wide variability of literacy achievement and the factors that affect literacy achievement in the classroom.
In this unit you will examine assessment techniques for determining learning needs in literacy by studying theory and practical learning activities. Teaching and intervention activities that accelerate literacy learning will also be explored.
You will be drawing on your knowledge of evidence-based literacy techniques to plan, implement and evaluate intervention strategies for literacy learning.
This unit requires you to have contact with children so you can complete the assessment tasks.
Requirements for student teachers who are entering a children’s educational setting are the completion of online anaphylaxis training, the completion of an online child protection module and a valid Working With Children Check (WWC).

Notes
This unit does not include a practical placement but does require contact with children for the purposes of assessment. Before working with children, all students must have completed the online Anaphylaxis training, an online Child Protection module, and have obtained a valid Working with Children Check clearance (for those students in NSW) or equivalent (for those students outside NSW).
This unit addresses Australian Professional Standards for Teachers at the Graduate Stage, otherwise referred to as Graduate Teacher Standard Descriptors (GTSD).

Learning outcomes
Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
- explain how students learn components of skilled reading and how difficulties with literacy learning are experienced (GTSD 1.1.1, 1.2.1, 1.3.1, 2.1.1, 2.5.1);
- critically analyse research for teachers on literacy learning difficulties and learning disabilities, including dyslexia (GTSD 1.5.1, 6.2.1);
- acknowledge the roles of external professionals and engagement of families in supporting literacy learning (GTSD 3.7.1, 7.3.1, 7.4.1);
- assess and interpret assessment of literacy learning to report on factors supporting and hindering learning and to set appropriately challenging learning goals (GTSD 1.3.1, 3.1.1, 5.1.1, 5.4.1, 5.5.1); and
- draw on knowledge of evidence-based literacy teaching and selected resources, including ICT, to plan, implement and evaluate intervention for literacy learning (GTSD 1.3.1, 1.5.1, 2.5.1, 3.2.1, 3.4.1, 3.6.1, 5.5.1).
